   Political Instability in Pakistan

    Introduction:

✓  Ongoing tussles between government and oppositions

✓ Culture of compromise and consensus never took root which left the democracy of the  country fragile and open to the intervention of other institutions such as military and judiciary.

Rare Moments of political consensus in Pakistan:

·            Adoption of 1973 constitution

·            Passage of 18th amendment

Lack of tolerance is evidenced in troubled center –province relations which repeatedly tested the country’s unity.

   Parliament’s performance:

·         Parliament’s current underperformance is also a throwback to the past. Successive governments in the past never lived up to the principle of parliamentary supremacy.

·         Parliament has been seen as a means to maintenance the government in power rather than an instrument of governance a forum to initiate and debate laws and policies.

8.       Provincialism rather than nationalism

     3.Impacts of political crisis:

1.       Political instability is directly proportional to the economic instability

2.       Erosion of democratic culture

3.       Social contract has been waning

4.       Constitutional deterrence has been declining

5.       Uncertainty of future coalitions

6.       Civil military division: Resentment against military is on the peak

7.       Judicial influence and activism in politics

8.       Pakistan Relations with major powers are on the verge

4.Solutions of political crisis in Pakistan:

1.       Culture of tolerance must be prevailed

2.       True sense of democracy

3.       Civil military engagements

4.       Decorum and respect of Parliament

5.       Separation of powers

6.       Reforms of state organs must be introduced

7.       Local governance should be introduced rather than provincialism

8.       Hung parliaments should be dealt in sanity-oriented way

9.       Media should be more public responsive

Critical Analysis:

Individual level

·         Political stability –help –skilled, educated, per capita income, living standard etc.

National level

·         Economy will be booming, development projects, terrorism will be upended, democracy will prevail, army will be back in their barracks.

 International level

·         Pakistan will get its due cause Kashmir cause will be respected; will play its influencing role in global arena. Independent foreign policy will be pursued etc.
