CSS/PMS English Precis and Composition Rules

 

Comprehension:

     Key points:

1.      One must have a good reading speed to master comprehension

2.      Master your vocabulary

3.      Understand the context of the passage as sometimes the questions may not be direct

1.      Read up idioms and phrases and understand their meaning.

2.      If you have mastery over precis, comprehension is 50% easy

3.      Questions help you to find a relevant part of passage to answer

4.      No length issue in comprehension

5.      In precis we have to maintain coherence, in comprehension it is not important you have to deal questions independently

6.      A question wrongly answered will not impact other questions.

7.      First person pronoun is allowed (I, we)

8.      Question asked “in your opinion "so you can inculcate your opinion in answer

9.      Start your answer from the statement of the question

10.   Read questions carefully

Precis:

·         Read paragraph 2 to 3 times

·         Write all the important points in detail

·         Examples, quotes, and references ignore

·         Own opinion absolutely ignores

·         Determination of theme carefully (central idea of the paragraphs

·         Precis is not mere reproduction of important sentences

·         Brevity is good but not at cost of clarity

·         Use of third person (he, she, it)

·         Ist person second person convert into author says

·         Direct speech into indirect speech

·         Omit statistical data

·         Precis should be short

·         1/3rd of original paragraph
